About #canvadesignchallenge

The Canva Design Challenge

We thought we would record our own attempts at the challenge (constrained to a maximum of 20 minutes per week), demonstrating our own agency's approach to design under time and project constraints. We will also regularly reference our PixelHaze Principles of Design (covered in detail in this article: ) to provide you with a solid foundation from which to build great, big, and beautiful things!

What is Canva?

The technical term for Canva is that it's desktop publishing software based in the cloud. So what on earth does that mean? In layman's terms, it means that Canva is internet and browser-based software that you can use to create graphics, social media posts, business stationery, posters, flyers, and even as a simple photo editor.

It comes with a wide range of starter templates and a pretty intuitive interface that allows you to start creating with little fuss. I like to refer to it as the Minecraft for graphic design: it's a playground with a wide array of tools that you can get up and running but like Minecraft, would you use it for very detailed, high-spec projects? Probably not. However, having said that we use it regularly for our own work.

Ready to go Canva Pro?

What’s the difference between Canva and Canva Pro? Canva is a free app that lets you create visual content like graphics, presentations, posters and more. You can use it to create social media images, blog posts, and all sorts of different marketing assets. Canva Pro is a subscription-based service that gives you access to design tools and features that aren’t available in the free version of Canva. If you’re creating visuals regularly, and want access to a wider range of templates and design assets (a much larger photo and illustration library), Canva Pro might be worth the investment. If you build it, he will come - Canva tutorial

  • Borrowing the lyrics from one of my favourite albums (Word Gets Around by the Stereophonics), I have looked to create a catchy graphic showcasing a fish out of water. For our goldfish bowl theme, we needed to find a suitable image that would allow us to remove the background and blend with the photo of the ocean floor. Please share your own attempt at the #canvadesignchallenge and get involved via the comments section. Enjoyed this one!

Designing the Three Billy Goats Gruff in Canva

  • With irresistible corn as this weeks canva design challenge, I couldn't resist using the famous quote from the 1989 classic, Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner: 'If you build it, he will come'. Well, we build the social media graphic in Canva, and now we wait... This one initially proved somewhat tricky to put together (would have been much easier with the array of clone stamp and heal tools in Adobe Photoshop), but we got there!

Canva design in 20 minutes - Waffles!

  • 'Who's that trip trapping over my bridge?'

Yes, this week's Canva challenge topic is fairy tales. I have chosen The Three Billy Goats Gruff as it is my favourite bedtime read (for the kids obviously), and I can often relate to that poor, misunderstood and house-proud ogre. Anyway, let's crack on...

Watch the #CanvaDesignChallenge unfold:

  • This week's topic is: Waffles!

In this week's design, we will be cooking up a wafflicious tribute to the 2001 masterpiece: Shrek. We will be creating a social media graphic with donkey's line:

"In the morning, I'm making waffles!"

PIXELHAZE ACADEMY CANVA DESIGN CHALLENGE

Each week, a member of the PixelHaze Academy team will be recording our attempt at taking on the official #canvadesignchallenge. There is a catch though! To add a little excitement to each week, we are limiting ourselves to 20 minutes to plan, design and finish a unique canva graphic that meets the brief and our very own PixelHaze Principles of Design. If you take on the challenge, do let us know how you get on. Good luck!
