Mastering Squarespace Page Settings

Elwyn explains how to stay organised and keep your menus clean by using the full set of Squarespace page tools.

Squarespace page types at a glance

If you have ever opened the Pages panel and wondered which icon to pick, you are not alone.

I tend to break page types into three simple groups:

  1. Flexible text pages – great for building section-by-section layouts.

  2. Groups and shortcuts – folders, links and member areas that tuck content away or point visitors to the right spot.

  3. Special pages – blog, store, calendar, portfolio, events, videos and courses that come with their own structure.

Using the right type means less clutter, lighter maintenance and a smoother visitor journey.

“Think of the blank text page as a one-size-fits-all canvas that lets us build unique layouts section by section.”

Keeping the navigation tidy

Top menus work best when they stay short. Folders add a drop-down so a single label can hide a full section. Links let one page appear in two places without duplication, and the Not Linked list stores pages that do their job without ever showing in the menu.

“The folder itself is not a link, so nothing happens when you click on it—perfect for grouping pages without adding extra clicks.”

Adding a new page

  1. Open Pages.

  2. Decide where the page belongs: Main Navigation, a folder, Member Areas or Not Linked.

  3. Hit the + icon and choose Blank Page for maximum freedom.

  4. Give it a clear name—be kind to future you.

From here you can drop in saved sections, pull blocks from SquareForge, or build from scratch.

“By clicking on that plus icon, that’s how we add the pages.”

Cleaning up URLs and other settings

A neat URL helps visitors and Google. Open the little cog next to a page to:

  • Change the Page Title (shows in the browser tab).

  • Edit the shorter Navigation Title if space is tight.

  • Tweak the URL Slug so it reads cleanly—replace -1 or random numbers with real words.

  • Grab a built-in QR code for print or stickers.

  • Toggle Draft, Password or Duplicate for safety.

“I don’t like the slug with the hyphen and a 1, so I rename it to something clear and keyword-friendly.”

Takeaway notes

  • Use text pages for full creative control.

  • Folders keep the main menu short and tidy.

  • Links stop content duplication.

  • Blogs, stores and events have built-in layouts—one page per section, many items inside.

  • Clean URLs and accurate titles improve search results.

  • Duplicate a page before big edits to create an instant backup.

Wrapping up

Squarespace gives us more than enough options to stay organised without losing our minds. Pick the right page type, keep your slug tidy and your visitors will reach content faster. New tutorials are on the way, where I will dig into blogs, stores and member areas in more detail. Until then, jump in and give your own site a quick tidy-up.

Cheers, Elwyn
